MS, LPC

“Queer people don't grow up as ourselves, we grow up playing a version of ourselves that sacrifices authenticity to minimize humiliation and prejudice. The massive task of our adult lives is to unpick which parts of ourselves are truly us and which parts we've created to protect us.”
— Alexander Leon (Writer & Queer Activist)

Matt Scott (he/they) joined Counseling Solutions of the Ozarks in 2022 and specifically works as an affiliated therapist with Gay Resources of the Ozarks (GRO).

Matt is a queer-identified therapist — identifying as both gay and gender non-conforming. Growing up, Matt lived within a conservative religious community and was exposed to reparative (conversion) therapy for over a decade. As an adult, Matt spent many years in therapy deconstructing his former identities and reconnecting with his core self. His desire is to “pay it forward” and create a space for queer clients to explore and connect with their true selves.

Matt graduated from Missouri State University in 2022 with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. While there, Matt collaborated with Dr. Cornelius-White to study the “Mental Health and Social Support Experiences of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Adults in Rural America.” Their article is published in the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health.

Matt works with ALL adolescents and adults, but his primary focus is serving:

  • Gay and lesbian identified clients

  • Gender diverse clients (i.e. transgender, gender-fluid, genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, gender non-binary, etc)

  • Individuals who are exploring their sexual and/or gender identities

  • Clients who are exploring and/or deconstructing their religious identities

  • Clients who are wanting to reprocess their traumatic memories utilizing EMDR

Matt has specialized training in:

  • Somatic Integrative Processing I and II (provided by Beyond Healing Springfield, MO), 2022

  • EMDR Basics (provided by the EMDR Training Academy based out of Colorado Springs, CO), 2022

  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy Level 1 and Level 2 (provided by the founders of the Gay Couples Institute in San Francisco, CA), 2019/2020

  • Trauma-Informed Sandtray Therapy (provided by Dr. Leslie Anderson), 2020
